Appoint or update an authorised representative or financial adviser

As an Australian financial services (AFS) licensee or authorised representative, you must notify ASIC when you appoint an authorised representative or a financial adviser (also known as a relevant provider). You must also notify ASIC if their details change. You can do this using ASIC Connect.

Before you start

To appoint or update the details of an authorised representative or a financial adviser, you need to:

ASIC’s Electronic Lodgement Protocol

Before signing up for ASIC Connect, read ASIC’s Electronic Lodgement Protocol. The protocol includes ASIC’s requirements for storing signed documents that you lodge online.

Steps to sign up for ASIC Connect

Enter your details

  • Go to the and enter the requested details.
  • Make your username something easy to remember.
  • Your password must:
    • be at least 9 characters long
    • include at least one lowercase letter (a–z), one capital letter (A–Z) and one number (0–9)
    • not include 3 or more letters in a row from your username, first name or last name.

Agree to the Electronic Lodgement Protocol and create account

  • If you agree to the protocol select ‘Yes’. If you do not agree and select ‘No’ you will not be able to sign up.
  • Then select the ‘Create account’ button.

Activate account

You should receive an activation email within 15 minutes. Select the link in the email or copy and paste it into a web browser.

ASIC key

To link an AFS licence to your account, you will need an ASIC key. This is a unique number that is connected to the licence used on ASIC Connect.

If you already have an ASIC Connect account and you know your ASIC key, you can skip to ‘Steps to link an ASIC licence’.

If you cannot find your ASIC key, you can request a new one. See our user guide:

Steps to link an AFS licence

Log in to ASIC Connect

Use your username and password to .

Start linking an AFS licence

Select the ‘Link a business/request ASIC key’ link from the ‘Do It Now’ menu at the right of the screen.

Enter your details

  • Select ‘Yes’ to ‘Do you have an ASIC key for your business?’
  • For business type, select ‘AFS licensees’.
  • Enter your date of birth, select your role in the business, and enter your ASIC key.
  • Select the ‘Link to Account’ button.

Confirmation

You will see a message confirming the AFS licence has been linked.

Appoint a financial adviser

Background information

Before you can appoint a financial adviser, you need to link an AFS licence to your ASIC Connect account. You can also appoint provisional financial advisers and time-share advisers (also known as limited-service time-sharing advisers).

You do not need to link a financial adviser to your AFS licence before appointing them.

Register a financial adviser

Background information

After appointing a financial adviser or a time-share adviser, you must also register them with ASIC.

Update or correct details of an authorised representative or financial adviser

Background information

When the details of an authorised representative or a financial adviser change, you must update them using the ‘maintain’ transaction in the portal. You can update:

  • authorisations (for example, whether they can sub-authorise)
  • qualifications
  • address
  • name
  • ABN.

You can also ask us to correct various errors on the register.

What you cannot do using ASIC Connect

You cannot do the following tasks on ASIC Connect. Select a heading to see more information.

Tasks done through the AFS licensee portal

You can lodge PDS notifications and applications for registration of managed investment 91AVs through the AFS licensee portal.

Tasks done through the ASIC Regulatory Portal

Many tasks and lodgements previously done through the AFS licensee portal are now done through the Regulatory Portal.

These include:

  • applying for an AFS licence
  • changing your AFS licence information
  • appointing an auditor
  • varying or cancelling licence authorisations and conditions
  • lodging annual accounts and audit reports
  • notifying ASIC of a change in control of an AFS licensee
  • changing responsible managers.
